Note: Modeling may involve the use of computer simulations and may also involve “in-situ” observations of experimentation using actual pollutants.

“In-situ” refers to measurements or observations taken directly at the location where a phenomenon is occurring:

Both approaches, in-situ observation and modeling, complement each other. Observations provide real-world data for validation and refinement of models. More

January 17, 1961   Farewell Address President Eisenhower

“Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military [intelligence] posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades.

In this revolution, research has become central; it has also become more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.”
